Donald asks…

My elderly mother is looking for lyrics and music for a song….?

…Can you help? She loves to sing and is wonderful at it.
The words that I “think” we know are as follows. “Oh my feet sometimes stumble but they can’t slow me down. I’ll raise up to meet him when I hear that trumpet sound.” What she knows of it sounds like an old southern hymn or old gospel bluegrass, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Mom’s 86 years old and I’d love to hear her sing it. Her voice is still so good that she can sing it in church even without the music and bring down the house, but doesn’t always feel physically able. She doesn’t get excited about much nowadays and doesn’t ask much so when she asked for this I began a desperate search to help her find this song. PLEASE help if you can.

Could these possibly be the lyrics? They’re not exactly the same as you’ve asked for but they’re similar:

It’s called ‘Ain’t No Grave’

CHORUS
Ain’t no grave gonna hold this body down
There ain’t no grave gonna hold this body down
When I hear the trumpet sound
Gonna get up outa the ground
Cause there ain’t no grave gonna hold this body down

VERSE
You said go down yonder Gabriel
Place your foot on the land and sea
But don’t you blow that trumpet until you hear from me

CHORUS

VERSE
Oh, look way over Jordan
What do you think I see
I saw a band of Holy Angels and they’re comin’ after me
I cried meet me Jesus meet me
Meet me in the middle of the air
I’m gonna rise to meet my Lord and I’ll say goodbye down here

CHORUS

VERSE
One day if they carry me out to the graveyard
Like my grandma like my grandpa
And they lay this body down
Don’t cry for me
Church—don’t cry for me

If it’s a different song I’ll carry on looking!

Paul asks…

Do you know what song is this?

It’s a bluegrass song, but with a more modern sound. And it’s a duet with a man & a woman (and I think the woman might be Alison Krauss).

Some of the lyrics are “You caused me to weep, you caused me to moan, you caused me to leave my happy home”. When I searched online for the lyrics, it says it’s “In the Pines”, but I’ve heard several versions of that song before, and I really don’t think that’s what this is.

Carol asks…

In what book can I find sheet music for “I Went Down a Beggar but Came Up a Millionaire”?

I’m our church piano player/choir director, and I’m forever looking for sheet music for a lot of the old bluegrass gospel songs. I know how to play them by ear, but the choir doesn’t do too well with just lyric sheets; they need the notes on the page. I’ve got probably a dozen hymnals and songbooks and always adding to the list, but this time I’ve run up against a wall. I can’t even find a reference online to a book that contains it.

The song I’m looking for is a bluegrass standard; “I went down a beggar but I came up a millionaire”. If anybody has got a song book with that song in it that could give me the title, or else knows what volume it could be found in, I’d GREATLY appreciate it. I’ve spent a few weeks or more searching online hymn sites, book stores, music stores, etc. Haven’t come across it yet. I can find the lyrics no problem, but what I need is something with music notes. Fake book would work; so would standard SATB or hymnal format. Thanks!

Try this store:

www.musicfolk.com — call and ask them if they have it. If not them, try a music store in Nashville.
