With the popularity of the internet and instructional guitar websites, lots of ways now exist to learn acoustic guitar.

One of the most frequently asked questions is how long does it take to learn acoustic guitar? Well there are 3 factors which decide this question

Is your natural ability to learn acoustic guitar high? Is the guitar website you’re learning from effective and using a modern method to teach you? Are you putting in a little bit of practice on a daily basis?

Lets take the first question. Every person, no matter how good their instructor, has a natural aptitude for learning guitar. For example you may possess a fast ability for learning to surf but not for learning to drive. To learn acoustic guitar you wont know youre aptitude for the instrument until you begin.

Choose the method or website you learn acoustic guitar from very carefully as not all guitar methods are equal! You want to find a guitar method which is modern, fresh and up to date since this will maximise your learning curve and improvement rate. Some pretty awful methods exist out there too which make things harder than they need be. This could result in failure and giving up so beware!

Fortunately some websites really do understand how to teach beginners and have developed a system to learn acoustic guitar which is fast and effective. Take advantage of these improvements to give yourself an enjoyable experience of learning guitar.

Lastly we must not forget practice! The key to practice is regularity and this means doing a little bit each day instead of 2 hours on Sunday and nothing for the rest of the week. To learn acoustic guitar you must make contact with the instrument for a short while each day.

Another common misconception when you learn acoustic guitar is that you need to memorize 100′s of chords and strums but actually, a basic set of just 10 chords and 3 or 4 strumming patterns are all you need to open the door to hundreds of songs.

To learn acoustic guitar, a basic set of strums and chords will normally take 4 weeks assuming your of average ability for learning guitar. You should be starting to play your first songs by that time. For some, being able to strum along to favourite songs will be enough but obviously some will want to progress more and more into advanced techniques.

In the beginning stages you will find certain aspects of playing quite difficult, even impossible! But even the most accomplished players once started as complete beginners and with time, as you learn acoustic guitar, every obstacle now will eventually become effortless.

For my last sentence I want to again mention the word ‘practice’. To learn acoustic guitar you must be motivated to do it and find ways to keep motivated. It won’t happen overnight.
